He Is Risen!

It was a cool springtime morning with the sun rising, the birds chirping, and the bells ringing in the old city of Jerusalem. It was an experience that we will never forget as we worshiped the risen Lord at the empty tomb. Every Resurrection Day the focus is on the empty tomb and to actually be there is amazing! We attended the service with some of the students from the college here and had a joyous time with them.

Good Friday

Friday was an emotional day for us and many others who walked the Via Dolorosa (Road Jesus carried the cross). The city was filled with different churches recreating the event of Jesus going to the cross. We traveled the road from the Antonio Fortress (the place where Jesus was judged and beaten by Pilate) down the Via Dolorosa and out the Damascus Gate over to Golgotha where Jesus was crucified. It's an experience we won't forget.

“And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center" John 19:17-18

Hezekiah's Tunnel

We went on a 40 minute walk through Hezekiah's Tunnel. It 's a narrow waterway that was carved through solid rock that Hezekiah built to bring water into the city of David. It was a lot of fun exploring together and walking in the waist deep water with flashlights. The Picture on the upper right is me sitting on the steps of the pool of Siloam at the end of the tunnel. It was the place Jesus used to heal the blind man in John Chapter 9.

"And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing." John 9:7

"This same Hezekiah also stopped the water outlet of Upper Gihon, and brought the water by tunnel to the west side of the City of David. Hezekiah prospered in all his works." 2 Chronicles 32:30

Mc Unleavened

It's Pesach (Passover) and all the leaven has been removed from every house, market, and restaurant in the city of Jerusalem. Even McDonald's has changed their menu to reflect this week long celebration. Our family has chosen to join with the Jewish people and observe the Passover law by not eating anything with leaven.

"For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, since whoever eats what is leavened, that same person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a native of the land." Exodus 12:19

Pastor Steve

It's been such a blessing for me to spend time with Pastor Steve Apple and his wife Pat. They both are special people that the Lord is using at Calvary Tel Aviv. Steve is amazing with his handle on speaking Hebrew and his ability to reach the people here. He is a great friend who ministers to me through his humble and tender heart for the Lord.

Passover Meal

It's springtime in Israel and we are still getting some rain here. Just outside the Hostel where we are staying was a rainbow in the sky. It was so cool to see it end up right at the building the Bible college is in here in Jerusalem.

Stones of Remembrance

Recently these stones were dug up just below the western wall of the city. They are stones that were throne over the side from the Temple mount when the city was destroyed in A.D. 70 by the Romans just as Jesus said it would happen.

"For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” Luke 19:43-44

Soup Kitchen

On Saturdays, Sabbath, we have been traveling out to Tel Aviv which is about an hour away from Jerusalem to attend Saturday services. It is kind of strange going to church on Saturday but that's how it's done here because Sunday is the first work day of the week. We have been attending Calvary Chapel Tel Aviv. It's been a real blessing getting to fellowship there and to get to know Pastor Steve Apple and his wife Pat. They are such wonderful people and the Lord is blessing their ministry.

This last Thursday we were able to go to Tel Aviv and help out with the soup Kitchen they set up to feed the homeless. We go out on the streets 2 hours before the meal and invite people to come and when they arrive we sit down and eat with them. It was a great time for us as a family to be able to minister there.

Walking the Wall

We were able to go up on the walls of the old city of Jerusalem and walk around. It was such a blast to see everything from up there, we felt like soldiers marching around the city. I can hardly wait to see the new city of Jerusalem... Lord come Quickly!

Student Ministry

One of the things we have been doing during our stay here is going around with the students from Calvary Chapel Bible College of Jerusalem. Pastor Mike Harrington, who is the director of the college, has ask me to help with some of the teaching. It's been a neat experience getting to teach the students at the different sites. In the picture above we are at the burial place of Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist.

Please pray for us as a family and that the Lord will continue to speak through my heart and give me the right words to teach the students . It's been such a blessing to get to know and spend time with the students and I am also excited to have the opportunity to take them through the book of Jonah in the classroom here at the Bible college.

Red Sea Experience

I went for an early morning dip in the Red sea with some friends from Calvary. It was cold but refreshing. Not exactly the way the Israelites did it with Moses but is sure was fun. The family and I were able to experience swimming in the Med. Sea, Dead Sea, and the Red Sea together. Way cool!

The Lost city of Petra

Petra is an incredible place with carvings of temples and tombs out of the beautiful rocks that make up the city. It is also the place where they filmed the last Indiana Jones movie. Nowhere else in the world can you see anything like it!

A Day in Jordan

We crossed the border from Israel over to the country of Jordan to visit the lost city of Petra. It's the place most believe where the Jews will run to and seek refuge and protection in the rock city during the time of the tribulation.

The Dead Sea

Look Mom I can float! ...Ha..Ha. The Dead Sea is really an incredible place. It is the lowest place on earth, about 1200 feet below sea level. It is salty too, about 30% more then the ocean which is what allows you to float. The water feels more like baby oil on your skin and if you have a cut, watch out, it stings bad. Nothing lives in the Dead Sea because it is so salty but when Jesus returns, the Bible tells us that water will flow from the Temple down to the Dead Sea and it will bring life to it allowing men to fish from here. No longer will it be considered dead water but Living Water!

Baptism in the Jordan

Words can not express the feeling I felt getting to baptize my family in the Jordan River. It was truly an incredible experience and one I will never forget! Pastor Jerry from Calvary Chapel Living Water assisted me and I was also able to assist him in baptizing those from his church as well. It was truly an honor and a blessing, thanks guys! Sea of Galilee

We had a great time of fellowship with others and in the Word out on the Sea of Galilee. What a blessing it was to be together as a family and see the Word of God come to life. It was a beautiful day! I especially like the American flag that was raised next to the Israel flag with the mast of the ship in the background forming a cross.

We visited the city of Capernaum next to the Sea of Galilee. It is the place where Jesus did many miracles and chose His disciples. It was the headquarters of Jesus during His ministry in the Galilee area.

We had the opportunity to join Calvary Chapel Living Water and Calvary Chapel of Japan on a tour to the sites outside Jerusalem. We also have been touring with the Bible college students here. What a blessing it is to hang with friends and meet new people when you are far from home.

Solar Eclipse

This week as we were leaving the Antonio Fortress (The place where Jesus was judged and beaten by Pilate) we saw everyone looking up into a darkened sky. It was a solar eclipse! It was so incredible to see and experience it here as we headed out of the old city of Jerusalem to the place Jesus was nailed to a cross. I was reminded that it was on that very day 2000 years ago that the sky grew dark as Jesus hung there at Calvary. It was truly an emotional moment for all of us.

Ein Gedi

Ein Gedi is a beautiful desert oasis that sits just above the Dead Sea. It's the place David hid from Saul and his men in a cave and also where David wrote Psalm 57 & 142. Pictured in the middle is Pastor Brian Bell of Calvary Chapel Murrieta with his wife Kelly and his daughter Mical. Brian is our pastor and we were so blessed to be able to spend time with them in Israel. Thanks guys we love you!

The Wailing Wall

We went down to the Western Wall which is known also as the Wailing Wall. It is considered to be the most holiest place in Jerusalem to the Jewish people. It is the wall that was closest to the Ark of the Covenant when the Temple was there in King Solomon's time. While I was there at the Wall I was ask by a Rabbi if I was Jewish? I told was not but my mom is and he said, "You're Jewish!" He then pulled me aside and performed the Jewish ritual of binding the Law around my hand and forehead. What an experience! "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes." Deuteronomy 6:8

A Day in Joppa

One of the first things we did in Israel was to visit the city of Joppa. It's the place where Jonah took a boat to Tarshish to escape the call of the Lord to go to Nineveh. It is also the place the Lord gave Peter the Vision to take the Gospel to Cornelius down in Caesarea. It is a beautiful city that sits on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

Here we are in Jerusalem over looking the Temple Mount from the Mount of Olives where we are sitting. What a blessing to be here with the whole family to see the Bible unfold in front of our eyes in living color! We had the opportunity to meet up with a team from our home church, Calvary Chapel Murrieta. It was a great time of fellowship together and we really miss them now that they're gone. The countryside is a very beautiful place with its rolling green hills and thatched roof houses. We really enjoyed it even though it was just above freezing cold and rainy. But in no way did it dampen our spirits or take away from the warm fellowship we had there.

While in London we went to the famous Madame Tussaud's wax museum. It was a lot of fun seeing the different stars, especially for Lorie and Jillian who posed for a picture with American Idol judge Simon Cowell who was a lot more pleasant to meet in wax.

Brothers & Sisters in the Lord

One of the highlights of our trip to England was staying out in the countryside at the home of John and Anthea. It was there that we met their close friends who have been their prayer support while they ministered in the Philippines. While there we were able to attend their weekly home fellowship. We were so blessed to spend time getting to know them and seeing their heart for the Lord. We found out that they know a lot about us through the Edwards and have been praying for us. It's so great to know that no matter where you go in the world when you meet other brothers and sisters in the Lord there is a real connection and friendship.

Previously they had been working as Missionaries in the Philippines and also had been attending our church in Iloilo. It was such a surprise for Jillian to be welcomed by them with a Happy Birthday sign. Jillian's birthday fell on a travel day for us so she was able to celebrate her 15th birthday in both Hong Kong and London.

We took a whirlwind tour of London and saw many of the sights like the Palace, Big Ben, and Harrods. Now we're headed for the English Countryside to stay with our friends at their cottage.

Hong Kong Trip

Hong Kong seems like the New York of Asia with the lights of Las Vegas. It was cold to us, but we had a great time together figuring out the train systems and ferries. We took a "walking tour" of Hong Kong (emphasis on walking!) and absorbed a lot of the local culture. We were even able to attend church services at the YMCA where we were staying. What a blessing to join with other believers and worship our Lord. Our next stop after this....London!

Big Buddha

We traveled to Lantau Island to see the "Big Buddha" at the Po Lin Monastery. It towers over the surrounding areas and can be seen from miles away. Many came just to see it, others came to offer food, incense, and prayers to the giant bronze statue. It was so sad to see those who were so devoted to a man made object. We are so blessed to know and worship the true and Living God.

A Day at Disney

What would a trip to Hong Kong be without a visit to the new Hong Kong Disney! It's quite a bit smaller than Disneyland in Anaheim, but we were able to go on every single ride and see all the shows. It was fantastic family fun.

When we arrived at the Manila Airport, we were surprised that the airline had upgraded us to business class! We laughed because this was such a luxury for us. In contrast to the extravagance of business class, when we arrive in Hong Kong, we are staying in the dorm rooms of the YMCA!

Journey to Jerusalem

On March 1st my family and I set out on a two month trip back to Israel. It is my second time to visit the Holy Land and a first for Lorie and the kids. After much prayer we felt that the Lord was directing us to get away for a time and allow Mark, the Assistant Pastor, to have an opportunity to serve and grow in the leadership role at the church. While in Israel we will be touring around with our Pastor and friends from Calvary Chapel of Murrieta and also I have been given an opportunity to do some teaching at the Bible College in Jerusalem. On our way to Israel we will be stopping over in Hong Kong for a few days and in London to visit some missionary friends of ours who ministered in the Philippines before and attended Calvary Chapel Iloilo. While we are away on this journey we ask that you would please continue to keep us and the church here in your prayers.

Good Friends

It was real a blessing for my family and I to have John White and Paul Steusel of Firefighters for Christ here with us in Iloilo. These guys have been such good friends for a long time and we have been involved together in ministry before coming to the Philippines. Several years ago while working with John on a ministry project in Mexico with Firefighters for Christ the Lord called me into full-time ministry. John has been a father, mentor, and friend to me and I am so blessed by his life. He truly is a man of God and a great example to younger men like myself.

Calvary Chapel Iloilo 4th Anniversary

This month we celebrated together our 4th anniversary as a church. It was such a blessing to see what the Lord has done in the lives of His people at Calvary Chapel of Iloilo. We were privileged this year to have John White as our guest speaker. We rejoiced with those who gave their hearts to Jesus through the message the Lord gave John. As I look back and reflect over the last four years, it is easy to see how faithful the Lord has been to us as a church. Truly we have been growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I am looking forward to what He will do in the years to come. Firefighters in Iloilo

John White, President and Chaplain of Firefighters for Christ, and Paul Steusel, a long time member of the ministry team, encouraged the Firefighters in Iloilo to live their lives for Christ. John spoke about his own life and 45 year career with the Los Angeles City Fire Department. He told the Firefighters that the most important thing was to know and to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and invited them to ask Jesus to be Lord of their life. Firefighters For Christ in Hong Kong

My son Joshua and I were able to go to the 9th World firefighters Games held in Hong Kong. We met up with John White and Paul Steusel of Firefighters for Christ Intl. It was so good to spend time with both them ministering with the firefighters in Hong Kong. John and Paul have been close friends of ours for a long time and it was a real joy to see them. Thanks guys so much for all your love and support to my family and I over the years. World Firefighters Games

It's an event that tests every ounce of your strength against some of the best firefighters in the world. What a blessing It was having the team come out from Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. This is the second time they have visited us here in the Philippines to do ministry. As always it was good to spend time with pastor Phil Twente and his wife Peggy. They were such a blessing and encouragement to us and the Filipino people here. Their love and compassion for ministry was truly seen and felt by each one of us. It was also great seeing Pat Doyle again! He was a part of the ministry back in our home church at Calvary Chapel Murrieta years ago. It so good to be able to reconnect and spend time with him and the others who were on the team this year. Thanks also again to Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa and our dear friends at Calvary Chapel Murrieta for your love and support to our family in helping us get our things back to the States.

Mommie Olga

Olga Robertson known also as "Mommie Olga" to thousands of inmates at the Bilangguan maximum security prison just outside Metro Manila. She is one of the most incredible ladies I have ever met. For 49 years she has been ministering to rapists, murders, and some of the worst criminals here in the Philippines. She has been instrumental in the lives of several men who she has led to the Lord, including two who went on to become pastors overseeing the Calvary Chapels on the prison grounds here. Olga has had many visitors over the years like Pat Boone, Chuck Smith, Franklin Graham, and many others who have been blessed by her faithfulness in ministry. She also has written a book about her life and was featured in the book "hero's" by Harold Sala. It was a real joy and encouragement to have the opportunity to minister with her again in the prison. It's a blessing I am sure I will remember for a long time to come.

Ordination Service

To God be the glory great things He has done! Recently we as a church incorporated with the Philippine government. One of the first orders of business for the board was to recognize the anointing and calling the Lord has placed upon Mark Cadagat's life for ministry. It's such a blessing to see how God is raising up people for ministry here at Calvary Chapel Iloilo.

Women's Fellowship

Iloilo Culture

This week starts the beginning of the Dinagyang festival here in Iloilo. People flock from all around the Philippines and even the world to celebrate this annual event that is filled with tribal dancing and drum competitions. It's sad because it's a pagan festival centered on the worship of the Santo Nino (a statue of the Christ Child).It's a reminder of how lost the people are and in need of the Gospel message.

As I stand over looking the sea here in the Philippines, I am reminded of the beautiful work the Lord has been doing and continues to do in our life and in the lives of the people here. Seeing the Lord placing His finishing touches of beauty on the evening sky to complete the day encourages us of what He will accomplish in us and through us as we yield ourselves to Him.

We have been blessed by having Maribel (pictured next to me) here from the United Arab Emirates. She has been a member of the church since the beginning and was even with us back when we were just a mid-week Bible study. For the last 2 years she has been working outside the country to support her family here in the Philippines. Today she is returning back to her work after spending some time with family and friends. We have been so encouraged by Maribel being here and will miss her as she goes but she will remain in our prayers.

Merry Christmas! We were so blessed this year to receive a Christmas box from many families from Calvary Chapel Murrieta. We were totally surprised at all the wonderful gifts, especially all the good eats that we can't get here.
